"I do not judge, I only chronicle."
John Singer Sargent
Bio, Contact, etc.
I write about all aspects of art and the art world – artists, museums, galleries, auction houses, the market, museum issues, art law, etc. Art is the perfect beat for anyone who wants to be a generalist in specialist's clothing; it has allowed me to tackle virtually any subject I've wanted to, from politics and technology to contemporary culture and social history.
I started out in the early 1990s, penning a column on New York for Modern Painters (then based in London). Although I had spent many happy hours in museums since childhood, at the time I knew next to nothing about contemporary art, so the assignment was something of a trial by fire. Happily, I proved to have an "eye," as well as the ability to write about what I saw for a very general audience – a rare combination at the time.
I soon graduated to The Atlantic Monthly, where my subjects usually had a political or pop-cultural angle. By the late 1990s, I was writing for the brand-new Time Out New York (often about the young British artists who were then infiltrating the U.S.). To educate myself I also contributed to art magazines, including Artnews, Art in America, and Art + Auction (aka "the art world Bible") where I learned about the market.
These days, I'm a contributing editor at Art + Auction. I write regularly for The New York Times and its style magazine, T, as well as Town & Country. I have also been published in many other venues, including Vogue, Domino, New York, Bloomberg News, Art & Antiques, and Inside Out's Art Basel Miami Beach. In 2007, I was honored to be one of seven journalists chosen from around the world as a USC Annenberg / Getty Arts Journalism Fellow.
Early on, I prided myself on being an "outsider" art critic. These days, I can't claim that status – but I still try to retain that perspective.
